Person writing a reactivation email to existing contacts on a laptop

Cold email and reactivation email look identical in the inbox — but they are opposite strategies. Cold email pitches strangers from acquired lists and typically earns reply rates around 1%. Reactivation email re-engages your own first-party contacts and commonly earns 5–15% — with lower legal risk, lower deliverability risk, and warmer conversations. If you have a real database, reactivation is almost always the better first move.

The recognition gap

Every email has to clear the same three gates: get delivered, get opened, get answered. Cold email fights uphill at all three.

  • Delivery: unknown sender + unengaged recipients = spam-folder gravity. Purchased lists are salted with dead addresses and spam traps that wreck sender reputation.
  • Opens: a stranger’s name earns no benefit of the doubt.
  • Replies: the reader must be convinced of who you are and why they should care, in one message.

A reactivation email skips half the battle. “You asked us about a kitchen remodel in 2024” or “you toured homes with our team last spring” triggers recognition. The recipient isn’t evaluating a stranger — they’re deciding whether an old interest is still alive. Often, it is: life got busy, timing was wrong, the project got shelved. Timing changes.

The math, side by side

Take 10,000 contacts and a $5,000 average deal (plug your own numbers into our Lead Leakage Calculator):

Cold listYour dormant list
Typical reply rate~1%5–15%
Conversations~100500–1,500
Cost of the contactsYou buy them (again)Already paid for
Legal/deliverability riskHighLow, when handled properly
Warmth of conversation“Who is this?”“Oh right — them”

Even at the conservative end, the dormant list produces several times the conversations from data you already own. That’s before counting the acquisition dollars a cold list burns.

The risk you don’t see until it’s too late

Cold lists carry compounding hidden costs. High bounce rates and spam complaints damage the sending domain. In the US, CAN-SPAM violations can run up to $53,088 per email — and purchased data means you can’t verify how consent was collected. Meanwhile, first-party data — contacts who inquired with you, quoted with you, bought from you — is data whose provenance you actually know.

This is why Aldezard’s boundaries are non-negotiable: no purchased or scraped lists, no cold calling, no consumer SMS. We only reactivate client-owned, lawfully collected data, with verified lists, gradual volume ramp-up, and isolated sending domains so the client’s primary domain is never touched. (Full process on How We Work.)

When cold outreach still has a place

To be fair: cold outreach is a legitimate tool for pure new-market entry, when there’s genuinely no first-party data to work with. But most established service businesses aren’t in that position — they’re sitting on years of inquiries nobody followed up on. Working the asset you own comes first; buying reach comes after.

How to tell which one you need

Ask three questions:

  • Do we have 5,000+ contacts we collected ourselves? If yes → reactivation first.
  • Did those contacts ever show intent (inquiry, quote, demo, past purchase)? If yes → reactivation first, segmented by intent.
  • Is the data exportable and lawfully collected, with opt-out records? If yes → you’re pilot-ready.

Three yeses means the cheapest revenue you’ll find this quarter is already in your CRM.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the cold email reply rate so low?

Because every gate is harder: unknown senders get filtered more aggressively, strangers open less, and the message must build trust from zero. Recognition — the thing reactivation starts with — is the single biggest reply-rate lever in email.

Is reactivation email legal?

Emailing your own lawfully collected contacts, with honest subject lines, a working opt-out, and a physical address, is exactly what US email law anticipates. We build campaigns to be CAN-SPAM conscious — though nothing here is legal advice, and any provider claiming “100% legal” should worry you.

What reply rate should I expect from my old list?

Ranges of 5–15% are common for genuine first-party reactivation, but it depends on data age, quality, and the reason to reconnect. That’s what a 30-day pilot measures.

Can I run both cold and reactivation campaigns?

You can — but never from the same infrastructure. Cold outreach risk should never sit on the same domains as your first-party sending.
